Alcohol is a nutritional source which provides 29kj/cal energy as well as a moderate level of protein carbohydrate and fat. However numerous studies find that alcohol in large amount is directly toxic to osteoblasts and thus; reducing bone formation by directly affecting bone mineral density and by altering both vitamin D and calcium metabolism.

However as per the moderate intake of alcohol is concerned, it is proved in certain quarters that moderate intake of alcohol is beneficial to the post menopause women since a decent consumption of alcohol helps in stimulating calcium production and has a positive effect on endogenous hormone level. For example -influence of alcohol upon inducing adrenal production of androstenedione and its adrenal conversion to estrone.

Thus while chronic and heavy use of alcohol causes low bone mass and low bone formation, a moderate amount could be helpful in the case of post menopause women.
