My sister is planning her baby now. I wanted to know if she should start taking precautions right away as they are planning. Or is she overreacting as she seems worried from the beginning.

No, she is not overreacting. Most women will take good care of their health when they discover that they are pregnant. But how many are aware that diet and health before pregnancy also play a major role in producing a healthy baby? Doctors have known for a long time that pre-pregnancy care is important, and although women are becoming increasingly health conscious and many now seek specific pre-pregnancy advice, there are many women who don’t.
Missing your first period is often the catalyst for thinking about your pregnancy, but you will already be two weeks pregnant at this point and it may take a further few weeks before you see your obstetrician. By this time your baby is developing rapidly and you may have missed opportunities to influence the pregnancy positively. The first 12 weeks of pregnancy is the time when all of the major organs are developing in the baby’s body. The heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, brain and nervous system are all formed at a time when many women do not even realize that they are pregnant. This is why pre-pregnancy care is so important.
