If you have an ectopic pregnancy, the most common signs are pain in the lower abdomen, usually on one side, and vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy. The pain may be present over several days or come on suddenly. It may lead to you to collapse due to pain or to blood loss into the abdomen. Occasionally there is pain in the shoulder tip, due to irritation of the diaphragm caused by the bleeding into the abdomen. The diaphragm is the large sheet of muscle that separates the abdomen from the chest. Its nerve supply is linked to the nerve supply to the shoulder. So if the diaphragm is irritated or damaged, pain is felt at the shoulder. Because of the serious implications of ectopic pregnancy, you must see a doctor urgently if you have any of these symptoms.
