The key to preparing for pregnancy is a well-balanced, healthy diet to ensure that your body is prepared for pregnancy, including a good daily supply of vitamins and minerals. Your diet should include foods rich in protein, such as lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs and beans; foods rich in calcium, such as milk, cheese and yogurt; fruit and vegetables to provide vitamins and fibre; and cereals, bread, pasta and potatoes to provide carbohydrates and additional fibre.
Keep your intake of foods rich in fat and sugar to a minimum. It is also sensible to combine this with a good fluid intake, and water, several glasses a day, is better than coffee, tea or sugar-rich drinks such as cola. Eat regular meals with a wide variety of healthy foods that you enjoy. If you get your diet right before conception, you will have established an ideal pattern for your pregnancy.
